Acupuncture is derived from the Latin names “acus” meaning needle and “puncta” meaning to prick. The practice of acupuncture is placing very fine needles into specific points on the body to assist the endogenous homeostasis of the various body systems within an organism (bringing the body back to balance). Western Acupuncture uses evidence based research to target specific points in the body. Needles are used to diffuse localized pain by stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. This boosts the body’s natural painkillers and increases blood flow. Often used for conditions involving musculoskeletal systems, such as acute or chronic neck, back, or joint pain. This can be combined with electro-stimulation, laser, manual therapy and pEMF therapy.

Some of the common conditions we can treat in your home:

  1. Musculoskeletal issues: This includes arthritis, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and other joint or spinal problems.

  2. Pain management: Acupuncture can help manage pain associated with various conditions such as postoperative pain, chronic pain syndromes, and musculoskeletal injuries.

  3. Neurological disorders: Acupuncture may assist in the treatment of conditions like paralysis, nerve injuries, and neurological deficits.

  4. Gastrointestinal disorders: Acupuncture might help with conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

  5. Respiratory conditions: Acupuncture may complement conventional treatments for conditions like nasal discharge, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory issues.

  6. Skin conditions: Allergic dermatitis, hot spots, and other skin conditions may benefit from acupuncture therapy.

  7. Behavioral issues: Acupuncture can sometimes be used to address behavioral problems such as anxiety, aggression, or compulsive disorders in animals.

  8. Immune system support: Acupuncture can sometimes be used to support the immune system, particularly in animals with chronic illnesses or immune-mediated conditions.

  9. Geriatric care: Acupuncture can be helpful in managing the symptoms associated with aging, such as stiffness, weakness, and reduced mobility.

It's important to note that while acupuncture can be beneficial for many conditions, it is often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes conventional veterinary medicine and other alternative therapies. Additionally, not all animals may respond the same way to acupuncture, and individual results may vary.

Laser

Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation therapy, is a non-invasive treatment modality that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate healing and reduce pain and inflammation. In animals, cold laser therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions by promoting tissue repair and reducing discomfort.

Laser therapy helps tissue repair by causing the following:

  • Endorphin release

  • Vasodilation, which increases blood flow to bring in oxygen and cells involved in the healing process

  • Muscle relaxation

  • Decreased inflammation

  • Faster healing and repair

The main clinical benefits of laser use in pets include decreased inflammation, decreased pain, and improved wound healing.

The effects of LLLT are not thermal but photochemical reactions in cells, termed photobioactivation. LLLT produces its physiological and therapeutic effects by applying enough energy to disturb local electron orbits, initiate chemical change, disrupt molecular bonds and produce free radicals at the cell membrane to control the inflammatory response, promote healing and pain relief.

PEMF THERAPY

LAIKA works with PetsPemf and Assissi Loop technology to provide Pulse Electromagnetic Field therapy for the patient. (You can purchase an Assisi Loop from us for $305)

The magnetic field stimulates electrical and chemical processes within the cells, helping to increase blood flow and promote the regeneration of damaged tissue and recharging the cells.

The only contraindications are for those individuals with pacemakers, insulin pumps, or other electrical implants, and pregnancy.
